It is common for puppies to frequently mouth and bite the arms and legs of owners. This is especially true if they have no other suitable outlet for play, such as another puppy in the household. Lacldng such an outlet, puppies will frequently hone-in on the arms and legs of their owners with their sharp teeth. It is particularly prevalent in such breeds as Golden retreivers and Labador retreivers. It is important to realize that mouthing and biting are behaviors normally found in the social play of puppies, As such, they cannot be eliminated from a puppy's behavioral repertoire. Instead, the best one can do is to effectively manage the problem until the puppy outgrows the tendency (usually around 8 months). Dr. Polsky will provide instruction in terms of how to manage this problem for those owners with "mouthy" puppies.
